Tuairisc: Celbridge retain County U-15 Camogie title
The Liz McDonnell Cup returns to Celbridge.
Celbridge 5-1
St. Laurences 2-3
Celbridge and Laurences played out one of the most exciting matches seen in the county for years last Friday night in Narraghmore. With both teams going hammer and tongs at each other the home team opened the scoring with a pointed free. Celbridge responded through a Sinead Cummins ’45. The Larries came back up the field and through some very good opportunism from Dearbhaile Byrne put the ball in the Celbridge net.
This was a wake up call for the visitors who immediately responded with goals from Stephanie O’Donnell, Aisling O’Halloran and Sinead Cummins. While at mid-field Niamh Berry and sinead McCabe were getting to grips with the St. Laurences duo of Monaghan and Keatley. Brilliant defensive displays from Laura Kirwan, Niamh Rosney and Chloe O’Donoghue tamed the St. Laurences forwards. A very relieved Celbridge management went in at half time leading 3-1 to 1-2.
The second half started at great pace with the ball going from end to end. Katie Devine, Aisling Slevin and Rebecca Manning were playing out of their skins in the Celbridge half back line. The Laurences girls would not lie down and brought the game to within two points with a goal early into the half. Lisa Marie Reynor, Davina Johnston and Niamh Egan started to get the ball moving into the Celbridge full forward line. The tension was unbearable as every battle was ferociously fought all over the field. Kirwan, Rosney and O’Donoghue were still standing firm along with brilliant ‘keeper Sarah McEniffe. Berry and McCabe were now taking control of the game and Lisa Marie Reynor was giving Melissa O’Neill plenty of problems.
A telling move late on saw Aisling O’Halloran move out to the half forward line, while Davina Johnson moved inside. The icing on the cake came in the last few minutes when the very dangerous Sinead Cummins buried a goal near the end to seal victory for Celbridge after receiving a great delivery from Aisling O’Halloran.
The Celbridge girls were determined to take the trophy back home in honour of one of its most famous daughters Liz McDonnell who was a brilliant underage player with the club.
Lisa Marie Reynor accepted the cup on behalf of the team .
