Subject: Referee Recruitment
Just before the Kildare GAA Convention in December the County Chairman Ger Donnelly asked me to Chair the County Referees Administration Committee. After consideration I agreed to help in whatever small way I could and we now have a dedicated Committee on board to focus on this very important area. The ability of the County Board to run a successful and efficient games programme depends on a number of factors with perhaps the main element being it's ability to supply referees to officiate at games. On taking on the role I found that seventeen club's in the county, almost a third, have no referee.
With current referee numbers it is virtually impossible to continue to sustain an annual games programme of over 1,600 matches at all age levels in hurling and football. There is an onus on all clubs to supply referees to ensure that the system does not break down and one of the goals of our new committee is to facilitate the provision by each club of at least one referee.
Training and guidance will be provided for all and a pathway is available for those who are ambitious to progress and their true potential can be achieved, whether that is at County, Provincial or National level. We are currently putting dates together for late January/early February for training courses etc.
Many thanks in advance for your consideration and help with this.
