Celbridge U16 Ladies Footballers are Division 2 Champions!

Congratulations to Celbridge U16 Ladies football team who won the division 2 championship on Saturday 2nd June, defeating Carbury by two points.

From the throw in both teams give it their all but struggled to get any scores on the board due to some wayward shooting and strong defensive work. Aideen Stack got the first score of the game and this helped settle the Celbridge team’s nerves as they followed this up with three more points. Laoise Mimnagh then scored the first goal of the game to put Celbridge seven points in the lead. Despite dominating possession Celbridge failed to add to their total and Carbury got right back in the game scoring two fine goals. A late free then ensured that the teams were level at half time 1-4 to 2-1.

Having got back on equal terms Carbury then went into the lead scoring 4 points without reply in the first quarter of the second half. Celbridge at this stage were also down to 13 players due to two yellow cards and certainly the game was in danger of slipping away from them.

However the resilient Celbridge dug deep and both Niamh Mortell and Maria Keating started to dominate possession and open up the Carbury defence. The game then turned in their favour when full forward Rachel O’Reilly fired in two goals to put the blues back in the lead. The same player then got her second point of the game to put her team three ahead. Celbridge were now on top and finished the stronger of the two teams. While Carbury got the last score of the game Celbridge’s defence led by Emma Lynch and Erin Ruddy ensured they never looked like closing the gap.

So congratulations to Celbridge on a deserved victory. Commiserations to Carbury who played their part in an enthralling game with Orlaith Sullivan the pick of their players. A feature of Celbridge’s season has been the depth of their panel and again this victory was down to a strong team performance. A big thank you to the mentors Tommy Stack, Paul Lynch and Darren Gallagher. The fact that this group of players have progressed from division 5 is a testament to the hard work that you and other mentors have put into the team over the years. The final word however has to go the players, you have demonstrated a high level of skill and commitment all year, winning every game and securing promotion to Division 1. You are a credit to the club and ladies Gaelic Football.
