The Leinster Camogie League, a pre season tournament for clubs in Leinster, kicked off on Sunday, with Celbridge making the trip down to Laois to meet local kingpins Camross. The home side have won 8 out of the last 10 County Championships, so it was a daunting opener for Tim O’Mahony’s team, which was made up of a blend of youth and experience. Conditions on the day were far from ideal, and along with a heavy pitch, the Hazelhatch girls found themselves playing against a strong wind and also the hill for the first half.
Not surprisingly, Camross had the bulk of the play for the opening session, and Celbridge did very well to keep the score down to 1 3 to 0 1 at half time. The vital Celbridge score coming from a clever handpassed point from Fiona O’Sullivan. Now playing with the elements, one would have expected Celbridge to eat into the Camross lead, but it was the Laois girls who started the second half better, and they soon sent over two quick points to open up a 7 point gap. But the girls in Blue gradually clawed themselves back into the game, and a goal from Aisling O’Sullivan followed by some excellent freetaking by the team captain Niamh Egan, ensured that Celbridge left the field with a well deserved draw. Kate O’Brien in goals and Niamh Concannon on the edge of the square kept the Celbridge defence strong, while youngsters Pia Mitchell, Aoife Kearney and Sinead Lee also featured well, and as well as her accuracy from the placed ball, Niamh Egan put in trojan work for Celbridge in the middle of the field. This was a good start to the 2016 season for the Celbridge girls, and manager O’Mahony has been delighted with the commitment shown by his panel at this early stage of the season.
