U-14 hurling team picture taken on 19-April by Stan Boryn in advance of the Feile 2016 Shield Final. There are a few lads missing who were playing U-13 football but we will get another photo taken before the final.
The Beginning
It all started back in the bitter cold of January up at the astro turf 5-a-side pitches, training in the rain, frost and snow. The squad shook off the Christmas turkey and began preparing for their Feile and U-14 hurling season.
This year’s team was a good mix of U-14 and U-13 lads. Some had played together in last year’s U-13 Autumn league so they weren’t strangers to each other. A lot of hard work was put in by players and coaches, training every Wednesday and Sunday for the next few months. We had an excellent challenge match against Na Fianna from Dublin which we won and then carried on to Croke Park to watch Dublin beat Limerick in the National Hurling League and then Dublin defeat Derry in perhaps one of the worst games of football ever to grace the stadium. It was a great day out and really bonded the team.

Our U14 hurling team are Div 1 shield winners!!
After an epic battle against a great Eire Og side, in a match that went to extra time, Celbridge fought hard to come out eventual winners 2-11 to 2-8.
Here is one of the facebook comments; "What a great year. the Football Final, Feile Shield, Cuman na mBunscoil final and now this Hurling league final. Well done to the boys, trainers and parents/supporters. Great days"

Celbridge U16 Hurlers earned a hard fought victory against a young and skillful Naas side who fought right to the end.
Celbridge got off to the ideal start with a goal and 3 points within the first 10 minutes..Naas gradually got into the game scoring 4 unanswered points Then came a purple patch for Celbridge scoring 2 further goals,with both teams then trading points Celbridge went into the break 3.04 to 0 09 ahead.
The second half was a tight affair also...with the Celbridge backs keeping their team in the game as Naas piled on the pressure. Naas hit the front with about 5 minutes to go and looked to have timed their run well...
However the Celbridge lads were having none of it and inspired by some outstanding goal keeping, which lifted the team all over the pitch, with midfield now becoming dominant and the forwards reeling off 4 unanswered points to secure victory.
A great game of hurling contested by 2 very determined teams played in warm sunshine ensuring supporters on both sides were well entertained and on tender hooks right to the final whistle.

Hurling Development squad
The following are now involved in the under 14 County development squad for Hurling they had a great day hurling by the lads on Saturday 2nd May in Bunclody Wexford in extreme conditions they did the club proud.
The Development squad will have a free flowing players policy allowing the selectors visit clubs and games to assess players improvement and in turn offer them a position on the squad .The Present squad comprises of 37 player and this is hoped to be further reduced to 30 players with no guarantee of position it’s all up for grabs. Chris Bryne (Coil Dubh )and Ken Lawlor ( Celbridge ) will be managing the squad for the 2015 season under the watchful eye of James Devane and Tadhgh Fennelly form the kildare development academy.

Result: Maynooth 2-5 : Celbridge 5-6

Johnny scored the first point of the game about 5 minutes in. This was followed later in the half by Conor T scoring a point. Maynooth scored 2 points in the first half and before the break they scored an unexpected goal from a dropping ball from a long range free. This left the score 0-02 to 1-02 at half time in favour of Maynooth. Their lead was definitely against the run of play as we dominated a lot of the first half but didn't make the most of the chances we had. We did not convert the possession we had into scores. In particular, while there was a lot of action around the Maynooth goalmouth our forwards were not clinical enough in taking their opportunities. The first score of the 2nd half was a bizarre own goal by one of the Maynooth players in the opening minute; this brought us level. Our lads seemed to get more accustomed to the bigger size pitch in the second half - it was the first game they have played on a full size pitch. Liam in midfield and our half forwards Ryan K, Johnny & Fiachra ran at their defence and picked out their targets better in the second half. Sean H, Oisin W, Conor T, Jack & Dean played in the full forward line. Tadhg. Ciaran and Harry cleared up most of the ball from our back line. They were aided by Tom (first game back after injury), Ryan M. Oisin L and Sean W. Oisin L switched to midfield in the second half and covered a lot of ground, with Conor O'S going to wing back. Shane was in goal and did well. Maynooth got a further 1-3 in the second half, however we had a better success rate with Johnny scoring 2-02, Conor T and Jack getting a goal each, while Fiachra and Ryan K both scored a point. This left the final score at 5-6 to 2-5. Although we were missing a number of our squad on the night - Ross and Aaron (both injured), Aidan, Colman and Niall (all helping out the other U-13 team), we were ably assisted by Conor Treacy, Oisin Lawlor and Sean Wall who all showed they are well capable of playing at this level. Overall it was a deserved win.
Our next match is at 4:30pm on Sat 20th Sep away to Rathangan. This is a team we have never played before; we need to put in a strong performance if we hope to win. Full turnout is required on the day as numbers will be tight since we have to give a couple of our lads to the U-13 Div 1 team.
Training is on Wed evening and Sun morning as normal.

Result: Celbridge 14-6 : Coill Dubh 0-01

Our U-13 Autumn leauge campaign opened with a home fixture against Coill Dubh. Thankfully the rain stayed away allowing the match to be played in decentconditions. Unfortunately Coill Dubh could only field 11 players so the game which should have been played on a full sized pitch with 15-a-side had to amened to a shorted pitch. This did not impact on our performance however.
We were missing Ross - who has a broken arm (not hurling related!), get well soon Ross - Aaron (watch out for those wasps !) , and Tom from the squad. From the throw-in the lads dominated their opponents and played well, doing the right things most of the time. We played with the aid of the breeze in the first half and went in 6-8 to 0-0 up at the break. A good score but we still had a number of wides. In the second half we continued to dominate, never giving Coill Dubh any chance to get back into the game, and ran out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 14-6 to 0-01.
This was our first game at U-13 level and therefore our first game playing full rules. The win was built on playing quick, direct, hurling while tacking hard and supporting each other while in possession. There were lots of great performances on the night but perhaps the score of the evening was an individual effort from Ryan Kenna who soloed up from defence and unleashed a great shot to the net. Niall was top scorer with 5-2, Oisin bagged 3-1, Shane got 2-0, Colman, Ryan K, Sean and Ciaran all got 1-0 each, Conor got 0-2 (and could have score more if the radar was working :)), and finally Liam scored 0-01. Every player contributed well and worked hard - Johnny was unlucky to see a few efforts go wide, Jack and Fiachra worked hard in the forwards, while Dean did very in his first competitive game for us - he won a ball and laid off a beautiful hand pass for Sean to score. All the backs played well although at times they did not see too much of the ball - Harry, Ryan M and Tadhg all were solid in defence, breaking out with the ball when necessary and providing a good supply into the forwards. Aidan made a couple of good saves and as usual his clearances and puck outs were excellent.
There will be much tougher games to be played, starting with next Friday 5th Sep away to Maynooth who we know are a very strong team. Its important that everyone comes to training on Wed evenings and Sunday mornings to improve their skills and our team performances. We will be making up part of the Feile squad in 2015 so we all need to constantly work hard in training to ensure that our matchday performances improve to a higher standard.

Result: Celbridge 3-7 Eire Og CC 4-8

This morning we played a very competitive match against Eire Og Coirre Coill losing by a small margin. We had a full squad of players available except for Johnny who unfortunatey was ill - all the team wish him a speedy recovery. We played 12 a side which meant that we had a number of boys on the sideline but everyone got at least one half of action.
EOCC started strongly scoring 1-1 early on but our lads responded well and got into the game with a goal from Ryan Kenna and a couple of points from Niall. Aidan started in goals today with Shane in midfield and Niall in the forwards.
Playing against a strong wind (and the rain) in the first half we went in down 2-2 to 3-4 at the break. Tadhg was his usual solid self in defence and aided by Tom cleared a lot of ball. Colman had a quiet first half (by his own admission) but improved a huge amount in the second and made some great clearances. Liam, Harry and Ciarán all worked hard in defence throughout the match and made things very difficult for the opposition forwards.
Conor, Shane and Aaron played well in midfield and kept to their task throughout the game. Ross had a quiet game in the forwards by his own high standards but kept fighting for every ball and made some vital plays including a nice point; as ever he never gave up on any ball. We had some lovely passages of play - one in particular when Colman cleared the sliotar from the backs, Niall collected it and passed to Fiachra who kept possession giving a nice hand-pass to Aaron who slotted over a beautiful point. This was closely followed by another point fropm Niall from a very tight angle - on his left side!
Ryan and Jack Malone played well - Ryan started in defence getting onto a lot of ball and then going into goals in the second half for the last few minutes. Jack and Oisin made their presence felt in the forwards and made it very difficult for the EOCC defenders to clear any ball.
Sean came off the bench and got stuck in straight away - he got some nice touches in and broke up the play well. Aidan was our goalie today and had a fantastic game. For a lad with no major experience in the position his puck outs were excellent and his general play and shot stopping was great. Shane started in midfield for the first time today and did himself proud. He and Conor won a lot of 'dirty' ball and were very physical which is exactly what is needed.
We traded scores with the opposition in the second half and finished strongly. Unfortunately we lost by a small margin but it was a good performance overall. There is of course still a lot to work on in training but what was pleasing today was our work rate and the fact that everyoine stood up to the challenge and even when we were behind nobody gave up and with a bit luck - we mssed a few scorable chances - we could have won.
Man of the match was Aidan Hancock who showed a matruity in goals as if he was playing there for years - well done Aidan.
There are 2 back matches remaining in our Autumn league against Clane and Maynooth. We are targeting to play one of these matches next Saturday afternoon. Training as usual is on Wed evening.
